Cacao Facts: Mexico has come a long way since cacao was used as a currency to trade goods. Despite being one of the formative nations in growing cacao, Mexico now produces a fairly modest harvest every year of around 50000 tonnes. Mexico’s production doesn’t even satisfy domestic demand, so they import a fair amount too. Studies have been carried out to see if planting per hectare can be increased with a desire to raise production from circa 350 kilos per hectare to 1000. The region of Tabasco accounts for around 70% of the nation’s production with Chiapas coming in second with 29%. the remaining yield being shared out in the Veracruz, Oaxaca and Nayarit regions.
